Ararat Farm Newsletter July 2024

Hello Everyone,

We hope you summer is going well! We have had a hot summer and very dry. It’s been a dry enough that even the tall grass has not had as struggled. Thankfully we recently did get rain so that as bushhogging is done the grass can recover well. This month started out busy but has calmed down a little. We are in between pork orders and moving cows through fields very quickly, hauling hay and a lot of bushhogging. Tis a busy season but we are thankfully for a good season for farm maintenance.

Summary of July:

  • Cows…move themselves…

  • The Perfect Pig

  • A Happy Sight

  • Enjoy the Slow days

The Herd

So there are days the cows behave and then their are days they don’t…We of course have a lot of bulls in the field that have recently been steered. With all the bulls though they have a tendency to ignore fencing especially on a hill. They have more then once gone through the fence and everyone moves to the next paddock a bit ahead of schedule. Most times it’s not a big deal but it can be a bit annoying.

The Pigs

The first few weeks of this month were the last for the piggies as we wrapped up Summer Pork orders. They all enjoyed their daily spas, especially on the hot days. Some were so big they simply lay on their bellies with the roles of fat on their cheeks resting on their legs…The essences of a pig…

A Happy Sight!

During the summer months when other farmers are cutting hay we try to purchase our winter stock. This year we were able to get hay earlier thanks to the spring rains making grass grow better then the last 2 years. It makes for a long 2 days of hauling but so rewarding! Between the rain this month and sunshine growing grass and hay hauled Lord willing the cows will do very well this summer and Lord willing into the fall.

Taking a Break

There is always so much to do on the farm and a never ending list of things that must be done. But, it is important to take a slow day here and there and just enjoy all the blessings the Lord has provided. It’s so much fun to do that on horse back!

That’s All Folks

That pretty much wraps up the month of July. It’s been hot but the Lord has blessed the last part of this month with so much rain. It is such a relief and a blessing. We hope you enjoyed this month’s update and we hope to see you next month! Have a blessed rest of your day.
