Ararat Farm Newsletter April 2023

Hello Everyone,

April is almost over bringing with it very few showers and actually some warm dry days this year. We are hoping for some rain soon. It was dry enough that farm Manager Matt was called to work forest fires in neighboring KY for roughly 2 weeks this month. So the farm has been maintaining with normal chores and Spring Beef order season. So lets jump right in.

Summary of April:

  • Herd fully rotational grazing

  • New calves!

  • One bad day

  • Happy piggies

  • Soon Pasture Chickens

The Herd

At the start of this month we had to move the cows to grass and start rotational grazing. We were running through our hay pretty fast so though the fields are a little immature we have starting grazing. To offset the immature grazing we are still supplementing hay so the cows have a better ratio of fresh and dry matter for them to digest. They have thoroughly appreciated moving to new paddocks every day and are plain out spoiled.

New Calves

It is still calving season and will be for several months as babies keep trickling into the herd. We now have 4 adorable little calves that are doing well and are spunky little things.

Spring Beef Orders

The end of this month we are starting to sort and load stockers for their one bad day for several customers. This Spring beef order season went so fast. We really appreciate everyone who got an order in this spring!

The Pigs

The pigs have been enjoying the warm dry days. The lazy things hardly come up to say hi cause they want you to come to them. If they fell just needy enough the come up and rub asking as politely as a pig can to give him a scratch. They are fattening well but definitely are living the pig life!

The Chickens

The broiler chickens are at the brooders! We will be bringing home the broiler chickens from our brooder very soon. They are growing well with just a few challenges due to the drastic weather changes we keep experiencing. We are very excited to get them on the ground and on pasture.

That’s a Wrap…

Well that was a very full newsletter update. We are in the full busy spring season now so lots of updates. We are very appreciative to everyone ordering spring beef. We thank you for visiting with us today and we hope you have a wonderful rest of your day. Until Next month.
