Happy Belated May Everyone,
Yes, yet again the month has slipped by and the newsletter is late! These spring months have been busy enough that it has been hard to sit down and record everything going on and get it on the update in time. We wrapped up our Spring beef as well as had chickens processed. The cows have maintained their daily rotations with lots of little calves we are keeping up with. We have had some larger projects started this month as well that will help with working cattle in the future. Let’s get started.
The Herd
The herd is doing well. Our South Poll numbers keep growing as little calves keep being born. We have a bunch of frisky little calves running around like crazy. The herd has started grazing up the ridge with daily rotations. With all the rain we have had the grass has been so tall and the grazing is so good!
Spring Beef
This month we hauled the spring beef for their one bad day. We spread it into 2 days and 2 separate weeks which makes it easier on the butcher and us hauling. The sorting all went smoothly and quickly which is so much nicer on the animals.
The Pigs
The piggies are still enjoying the foraging and especially the ponds that keep forming from all the rain we have had. They happily come running up when they hear us call expecting their treats. Most of the time they are too muddy to be pet even though they really want a good scratch.
The Chickens
This month we finished and wrapped up the chickens. These birds thoroughly enjoyed their daily moves and the GMO free feed. We loaded them in the trailer and utilized our butcher for processing this batch. These birds ended up huge!
Troubleshooting never ends
We always have to share these little snips of hard days. Farming has so many hard working and good days but there are plenty of days spent fixing one thing or another and always troubleshooting problems. The new spring we tapped into last year which has been working very well has had days were it’s pumps quit pumping. We have spent several days as the cows are coming up the ridge testing water to figure out the issue. There is always something that needs to be maintained and fixed.
5 Year Old!
We had to share this little snippet of Little Farm Hand as she reached the mile stone of 5. It’s crazy that 5 years ago we posted about her arrival. Now she is big enough to drive the atv and run fence and ride horses. Time really does fly but what full first 5 years she has had!
