Happy Spring Everyone,
Spring is here and life is blooming on the farm! Babies are being born, grass is starting to green and trees are starting to bud. Life is getting even more busy on the farm now with Spring beef not too far off as well. We have been doing normal chores as well as rebuilding and adding on to the corral in prep for holding animals and to sort larger groups of animals. We also have an exciting update as well!
Summary for March:
-
Adorable Calves for 2025
-
Piggies starting to out grow the barn
-
Bison on the Farm!
-
Wind clean up
The Herd
The herd is doing well and starting to enjoy little snacks of grass but still strictly on hay. We have had a lot of stocker steers added to the farm recently in prep for this Spring and Fall beef. We have also had the opportunity of selling a few of our South Poll heifers (mostly to get the herd number down a little).
Calving Seaon
Calving season is in full swing now. We have had 2 adorable little red calves as well as a longhorn stocker that dropped a little white calf.
The Pigs
The piggies are doing well and getting pretty big. In a few weeks they will be out growing the barn and probably have to out on pasture. They are still jumpy but so come up for treats and don’t mind a scratch or two.
Bison are on the Farm
The bison are on the farm. We purchased 15 animals total but 12 of them are small and going to be used for a local arena until next year. We got 3 larger bison for this year to graze out and hopefully have available by fall of this year. We are excited to graze these animals again and hopefully it all goes smoothly. We are holding them in our corral and going to work on training them to electric before letting them out in the field.
Storm Clean Up
Spring and Fall tend to be the windiest seasons which bring in storms and down trees. This spring we have had some pretty strong winds that have created big fires in our region and have downed quite a few trees on the farm. We are having to clear roads pretty often.
That’s A Wrap
Well that should wrap things up for March. It’s been a busy month but we are enjoying the warm days that welcome spring in and the few cold days and make winter not quite want to let go. Thank you for visiting with us to day and we look forward to next month!
